What to Do With a 1990s Fireplace Wall? How to Safely and Beautifully Mount a TV Without a Mantle

If your home was built in the late ’90s or early 2000s, chances are your fireplace wall includes some form of a “media nook.” These bulky cavities were designed to house tube TVs and VCRs—products that are now long gone, but the architectural footprint remains.

Modern homeowners want clean lines, discreet tech, and smart design. So how do you adapt these outdated built-ins to support today’s flat panels, soundbars, and streaming setups—especially when you want a TV above a working fireplace?

Let’s take a look at one real-world solution we implemented in a Denver-area remodel. Here is the before photo!

The Project: From Obsolete Nooks to Integrated Design

In this home, the original fireplace wall was constructed with deep recesses above and beside the fireplace, intended to house media equipment. But they didn’t suit the client’s new gear—or their taste.

The client wanted:

  • A minimalist, mantle-free look
  • A way to protect the TV and soundbar from fireplace heat
  • A completely clean wall surface with no exposed cabling or visible equipment

The Solution: Recessing Without a Mantle

One of the most common solutions to heat management when mounting a TV above a fireplace is adding a mantle, which helps deflect rising heat away from the sensitive electronics.

But in this project, we achieved that same protective function without a mantle—by recessing the entire TV and soundbar into the wall itself.

Here’s how:

Recessed Placement for Heat Protection

By sinking the TV and soundbar into the wall, we created physical separation from the radiant heat of the firebox. This reduces exposure to direct heat and avoids the need for additional surface elements like a mantle.

We also used heat-resistant backing materials and ensured that the recess cavity met our standards for passive ventilation and safe clearances.

Architectural Integration

Rather than mounting the screen on top of a dated cutout, we treated the wall as a modern, continuous surface. The recess is clean-lined, proportioned perfectly to the equipment, and sits flush with the surrounding finish materials.

This keeps the aesthetic sleek, symmetrical, and unobtrusive—a far cry from the bulky TV cavities of the 90s.

Cable Management and Control

All wires were routed behind the wall through Precision’s custom prewire infrastructure. Nothing is visible from the front. Control is handled through a central system (like Savant), allowing for easy operation from remotes, phones, or wall-mounted keypads.

Why We Avoid the “One-Size-Fits-All” Mount

Mounting a TV over a fireplace can be tricky. Without careful design, it’s easy to run into:

  • Overheating
  • Uncomfortable viewing angles
  • Visible wires
  • A cluttered or dated look

Recessing the display—instead of using a surface mount—can eliminate these problems when done correctly. It requires proper wall depth, safe construction materials, and AV expertise to make sure the tech operates reliably without overheating or requiring constant adjustment.

Final Result: Modern, Minimal, and Safe

This project checked every box for the homeowner:

  • A cleaner look
  • Protected electronics
  • Modernized layout without demolition of the entire wall

The fireplace wall is now a showpiece, but doesn’t scream for attention. It quietly supports the client’s lifestyle with beautiful, built-in tech—and no mantle required.
