The rack is a piece of architecture. It needs floor space, power, cooling, and a path to the rest of the house — and it is the one item most often discovered missing during framing.

We size it during design development, then plan cabling and access point placement so a home built of stone, steel, and radiant barrier still gets clean wireless coverage everywhere.

Rack and network requirements

  • Dedicated conditioned space, not a hot mechanical closet
  • Floor area for the rack plus service clearance front and rear
  • Dedicated 20-amp circuits with surge protection and UPS capacity
  • Active cooling or supply-and-return airflow to the space
  • Conduit paths to attic, crawlspace, garage, and exterior
  • Structured cabling home runs on Cat6A minimum
  • Access point locations set by survey, on hard-wired drops
  • Fiber backbone between buildings or distant wings
  • ISP demarcation location and a second WAN path for failover
  • Camera, control, and AV runs terminated and labeled at the rack

Coverage is a construction problem

Stone veneer, plaster on lath, steel framing, and low-E glass all attenuate Wi-Fi hard. We survey the plans, place access points on hard-wired drops, and stop the house from needing a mesh workaround later.

Cool, powered, and reachable

Racks fail from heat and bad power more than from anything else. We plan real airflow, dedicated circuits, surge protection, and UPS runtime, and we leave rear clearance so service does not mean disassembly.

Network & rack planning

How much space does a home equipment rack need?

A modest home may need a single rack in a four-by-six space; large estates often need two racks plus lighting panels, with service clearance front and back. We give exact dimensions during design development.

Does the rack need its own cooling?

In most cases, yes. Racks generate steady heat, and a sealed closet without supply and return airflow shortens equipment life and causes intermittent faults that are hard to diagnose.
